What to do in Gordes
A multitude of festivities are held in Gordes throughout the seasons: a good reason to visit the town!
Here are 5 places to visit in all seasons:
- The village of Les Bories: listed as a historic monument in 1977, this village is home to small huts built from local dry stone. Scattered throughout the mountain, they were home to the shepherds and farm workers of yesteryear.
- The Palais Saint-Firmin cellars: listed as a historic monument, they date back to the Renaissance. These semi-troglodytic cellars have been renovated by an enthusiastic couple to store mills and oil tanks. The courtyard has also been transformed into a magnificent flower garden. An underground visit to be enjoyed by all the family!
- Sénanque Abbey: this monastery, 5 km from Gordes , is a must-see. It is set amidst fields of lavender, planted by the monks in the late 60s. The monks of Sénanque also produce olive oil and honey. The abbey is open to visitors who come to admire the former dormitory, the abbey church, the chapter house and the chauffoir.
- L’église Saint-Firmin: named in honor of the village’s patron saint. The building features sumptuous woodwork and eye-catching murals. During your visit, you’ll be transported into a magical, fairytale world.
- L’aumônerie Saint-Jacques (Saint-Jacques chaplaincy): once a refuge for pilgrims on pilgrimage. The building is clad in blond stone and topped with a plant cap reminiscent of the Senanque chapel.
