Avignon :capital of the Côtes du Rhône and gourmet festivals

In addition to its remarkable cultural heritage, the city of the Popes is also a major wine-growing center. The cultivation of vines in Avignon dates back to the Middle Ages and the arrival of the Popes in the city. Vineyards have developed over the centuries, and in 1996 Avignon was elected capital of the Côtes du Rhône.

Today, the Côtes du Rhône vineyards are classified as AOC, appellation d’origine contrôlée. These fine, generous wines are the result of the expertise of the region’s winegrowers and their varied, remarkable terroirs.

The main grape varieties include Grenache, which produces a round, fruity red wine. Mourvèdre and Syrah provide spicy aromas and wines that age well.

Avignon’s wine culture is celebrated every year with convivial wine festivals . The festivities kick off on Ascension weekend and last throughout the summer season.
